“A major event occurred in San Francisco in 1915 that returned our city to the world stage again, what was that event?”
The Answer is…
The Panama-Pacific
International Exposition.
It was our
World’s Fair to prove to the world, that after our devastating 1906 earthquake,
San Francisco was ready to take her place on the World Stage again.
Open from February 20th to
December 4th in 1915. Its focus was to celebrate the completion of the Panama
Canal, but was our opportunity to showcase the City’s speedy recovery from the
quake The fair covered an 635 acre site on the city’s
northern shore.
The grand promenade was
said to be an awesome display of towering and majestic white buildings brightly
lit against the midnight blue skies with a dazzling array of white light bulbs,
an still uncommon phenomenon in those log ago days.
Our Parlor host, The
Chancellor Hotel Union Square, was built in 1914 expressly to help accommodate
the thongs of visitors expected that next year at the fair. Today many of the original
amenities, which have survived almost 100 years, are part of the hotel’s charm
and ambiance.
